ATLANTA – Coming into UFC 201, many thought Rose Namajunas would punch her ticket to a fight with strawweight champ Joanna Jedrzejczyk. Karolina Kowalkiewicz had other ideas, however, taking a split decision over Namajunas to claim her own shot at the gold.
The women’s strawweight bout was the co-main event of today’s UFC 201 event at Philips Arena in Atlanta. It aired on pay-per-view following prelims on FS2 and UFC Fight Pass.
Namajunas (5-3 MMA, 3-2 UFC) cracked with a good right hand almost halfway through Round 1, the first truly meaningful shot of the fight. After Namajunas fell following landing a solid leg kick, Kowalkiewicz (10-0 MMA, 3-0 UFC) attempted to pounce but was unable to land anything meaningful.
Kowalkiewicz spent most of the opening round trying to close distance. When she did with almost 30 seconds left in the round, she landed some solid knees to the body in the clinch before Namajunas fired punches to work her way back outside.
Round 1 ended with a scramble to the ground where Namajunas ended up in top position and landed a handful of punches before time expired.
Apparently lifted by her late success on the ground in Round 1, Namajunas opened the next round clinching against the cage looking for takedowns while eating the knees and elbows of Kowalkiewicz.
Kowalkiewicz landed a hard elbow and knee that forced Namajunas to abandon the clinch, but Namajunas came back with a hard two-punch combination that rocked Kowalkiewicz’s head back. Kowalkiewicz was then briefly dropped by a hard front kick to the body.
The two continued to trade big shots, Kowalkiewicz relying on her knees to the body and hard elbows while Namajunas threw power punches to the chin.
Namajunas appeared to fade as the fight went down, likely a result of the heavy shots to the body from Kowalkiewicz. Still, she continued to try to land heavy punches while Kowalkiewicz fired in her technically sound strikes.
Kowalkiewicz tagged Namajunas against the cage with another heavy flurry at the halfway point of the round, ending with her taking top position.
Namajunas attempted an armbar and a leg lock but Kowalkiewicz ably spun out of both submission attempts and landed more punches from inside the guard.
Kowalkiewicz avoided two omoplata attempts before the fighters went to the feet to close the fight, both landing punches at the final horn.
Kowalkiewicz was awarded the fight via split decision by the scores of 29-28, 28-29 and 29-28. She remained undefeated in victory and took a step toward a shot at the strawweight title.
