Exeter is bracing itself for another 24 hours of disruption following a massive city centre fire which ripped through two floors of an electrical shop yesterday.

Emergency services remain on the scene in Sidwell Street this morning making the scene safe, following the fire at Richer Sounds. Surrounding roads remain closed in the meantime.

Nearby residents were evacuated from their homes yesterday, with several spending the night at the nearby Civic Centre. They have been told they may not be able to get back into their properties for at least two days.

Crews were first notified of the fire at 1.45pm on Wednesday when a customer in the shop smelled burning.

The source of the smell could not be found by staff but smoke is reported to have started bellowing out of the basement. The fumes were so bad that residents and business around the area were evacuated and people were asked to shut their windows if they could smell smoke.

Those living as far away as Heavitree said they could smell the fire.

In total 15 fire engines and over 100 firefighters were called in across the evening, with extra water being pumped from the River Exe at Exeter Quay. Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said the incident was a 'severe fire in the basement with high fire loading and restricted access'.

Road closures were put in place across the city because of the incident, these included:

St Anne's roundabout

Western Way

Sidwell Street

Summerland Street

Blackboy Road

Old Tiverton road

Additional road closures are now in place at Henry's Bar on Blackboy Road.
