TOP 10 LIST: Summer's best boys basketball players
The calendar from April-July makes up the “second season” of high school boys basketball, where players running with their school
1. JEMARL BAKER (Roosevelt HS): A 6-foot-4 2017 shooting guard isn’t ranked as one of the top players in the state by mistake. He played for Earl Watson Elite during the travel ball spring and July seasons, competing in the national Under Armour Association circuit. Baker, a Cal commit, ended his summer on the ultimate
2. JALEN HILL (Centennial HS): The 6-10 2017 forward and UCLA commit, plays for the Compton Magic Elite team that played in the adidas Gauntlet circuit. Hill, who has a stellar post-up game and is a force in the paint, represented the U.S. in an international
3. MATT MITCHELL (Roosevelt HS): This 6-6 2017 wing-forward was a starter as a freshman on Riverside King’s 2014 CIF championship team and was a key reason Roosevelt shared the Big VIII League title last season. During the travel ball season, Mitchell was a beast for Riverside-based Team Eleate during the adidas Gauntlet series and was instrumental in Eleate’s victory in the Double Pump Best of Summer tournament. Mitchell can shoot
4. MATTHEW BRADLEY (San Bernardino): The 6-5 2018 wing is powerful like a forward, skilled like a guard and plays with a confidence that belies his grade. Team Eleate competed in the adidas Gauntlet circuit where Bradley played “up” on the 17U elite team. He helped the Marvin Lea-coached team to the elite division title at the Double Pump Best of Summer tournament in Anaheim, averaging a double-double.
5. ISAIAH MOBLEY (Rancho Christian): At 6-8 with a 7-3 wingspace, this 2019 gem has recruiters drooling at the possibilities. Mobley, who played for the Compton Magic’s 16U elite team during the adidas Gauntlet circuit, has more than a dozen offers. That’s only going to grow for a player who can run the point, defend the post, jump center, block shots, shoot the 3, post up and take defenders off the dribble. And he is only going to grow, both physically and with his already-polished game.
6. ONYEKA OKONGWU (Chino Hills): This 6-9 2019 center broke away from the Chino Hills’ greatest show on the hardwood and emerged as one of the top young players in the country. ESPN ranks him as the No. 5 player in his class. He played “up” on the Compton Magic 17U team in the adidas Gauntlet circuit. He ranked third in rebounding (11.2) at the adidas Summer Championship tournament. Okongwu just finished playing on a 2018 team at adidas Nations, where, at 15, he was the youngest in the international camp of more than 80 players.
7. KIM AIKEN (Redlands East Valley): This 6-7 2017 forward with a polished floor game, had a breakout summer that garnered his first college offer. Aiken can shoot the 3, attack the rim, body up on defense and pound the boards. He runs with the Riverside-based Inland Empire Basketball Program (IEBP) where he is good for a
8. DEWAYNE HOLMES (Temecula Valley): The electric 5-9 2017 point guard, who was key to the Golden Bears’ run to a CIF-SS divisional title game, brought end-to-end energy and an explosive and relentless attack as Temecula Valley battled for championships in two June tournaments against the likes of Arizona’s Brophy Prep, Montebello Cantwell Sacred Heart and Anaheim Canyon. Holmes fearlessly attacks the basket against bigger players, brazenly pulling up on the break to hit the 3 and brilliantly baiting defenders into takeways that become transition points.
9. MASON WESTLAKE (North): He is a hard-nosed 6-foot 2018 lead guard with vision and an undeniable competitiveness. Westlake interned as a sophomore on varsity behind HSGameTime Player of the Year Dikymbe Martin on the CIF-Southern Section Division 1AA champions. Westlake’s leadership and confident control of the game is immediately obvious. He ran point for Loma Linda-based Inland 17U Elite travel ball club, a team that included 2016 grads and 2019 newcomers.
10. GREG WALTER (Rancho Christian): A four-year starter at the small Temecula private school, Walter is a long athletic 6-5 guard, who was forced to defend the post as a junior on a CIF-SS divisional finalist. But Walter, playing a post-grad travel circut this
