McGee (18-5 MMA, 7-4 UFC) scored with a cracking right hand that stunned Steele (14-8 MMA, 1-3 UFC) just seconds into the bout. Steele attempted to buy a moment to recover, but McGee slammed him to the canvas and immediately took the back.
With McGee on his back, fishing for a rear-naked choke, Steele attempted to hand fight to stay safe but almost was forced to submit to a nasty neck crank.
Steele managed to survive and turn into the choke and stand back up as the crowd loudly chanted, “Utah.” He managed to work his way back into the fight toward the end of the round, apparently recovered from the stinging shot earlier in the round.
Steele loosened up on the feet in Round 2, opening up with kicks and punches before pushing McGee’s back into the cage and working for a takedown. McGee managed to turn the position around and look for his own single-leg takedown before separating back to striking range.
After a striking exchange, McGee scored with a takedown but Steele popped back to his feet through pure strength. McGee was relentless for the remainder of the round, looking to put Steele back on the canvas.
With his corner urging him to let his hands go, Steele opened Round 3 with heavy punches and elbows. McGee countered the aggression with a body kick but was cracked with a heavy left hand in return.
Steele cracked with more heavy shots that backed McGee. The Utah native switched back to his takedown-heavy approach, trying to push Steele to the cage in the clinch.
The referee restarted the fighters but a bloodied McGee drove Steele back to the cage and into a clinch as the fight came to a close.
With the decision left to the judges, McGee walked to his corner celebrating with his arms raised. The judges didn’t give reason to deflate his excitement, awarding McGee the fight by scores of 30-27, 29-28 and 29-28.
“It’s hard to explain how I felt,” McGee said. “I think I did the best that I could tonight. It felt absolutely incredible. I’ve got a decade in this fight game. It’s every MMA fighter’s dream to make it to the big show, and when the big show comes to Utah, and to get the victory, is just incredible. His heart surprised me. I felt like I had him right off the bat, and then he just came right back. I felt like I had him, and then he came right back again. He had an incredible heart and drive and determination to keep on going, which was very impressive.”
McGee rebounded from a first-round TKO loss to Santiago Ponzinibbio in his previous bout while Steele is now on a two-fight losing skid.
