Paul Gascoigne - Gazza Tribute - HAPPY BIRTHDAY (AS)

"The most naturally gifted English midfielder of his generation."

Paul Gascoigne was born in Gateshead on 27 May 1967.

He grew up in Dunston and starred for his local side, Redheugh Boys Club.

His small stature saw professional clubs relucant to sign him, but Newcastle United took him on as an apprentice in 1983.

Twenty-five goals in 99 games captured the attention of Tottenham who signed him for £2m in 1988.

Gascoigne quickly became a terrace hero at White Hart Lane with some brilliant midfield displays.

He soon made his international debut and impressed Bobby Robson sufficiently that he was included in England's 1990 World Cup squad.

He set Italia 90 alight with some inspirational displays as England reached the semi-finals.

Gascoigne's role in England's semi-final defeat to West Germany on penalties is now firmly enshrined in football folklore.

He was enjoying the upperhand in a tense midfield battle when an innocuous tackle saw him pick up a booking, ruling him out of a potential final.

His subsequent tears made him a national hero and gave him worldwide fame.

'That' free-kick

His performances went from strength to strength for Spurs under the management of Terry Venables.

Gazza virtually single-handedly propelled his side on a memorable FA Cup run which saw them come face-to-face with arch-rivals and champions elect Arsenal in the semi-finals.

He blazed a stunning 30-yard free-kick past David Seaman as Spurs won 3-1.

He eventually moved to Serie A's Lazio for a then British record fee of £5.5m.

He found the level of intrusion into his public life hard and a catalogue of serious injuries saw him make only 41 appearances in his three seasons in Rome.

The affection the fans afforded him was huge and he remains a popular figure to Lazio supporters.

Gazza moved to Rangers in 1995 and landed himself in hot water in a pre-season friendly as he mimicked playing the flute, a Loyalist symbol, infuriating the catholic Celtic half of Glasgow.

That aside, his career took off again at Ibrox as he played a key role in Rangers dominance, winning two league titles, one Scottish Cup and one League Cup.

Gazza’s drinking habits came under fire prior to Euro 96 as he and his team-mates were pictured playing a drinking game on their pre-tournament visit to Hong Kong.

Gazza then let his feet do the talking and scored a magnificent goal as England beat Scotland en route to the semi-finals, where they suffered another excruciating penalty loss to Germany.

Gazza got married to Sheryl but it did not stop a steepling fall from grace.

Another flute playing incident in a match with Celtic prompted the end of his time in Glasgow and he moved to Middlesbrough soon after.

Gazza hoped his move to Teesside would help book his place in England’s 1998 World Cup squad.

However, Glenn Hoddle overlooked him and ended his 57-cap international career.

He took the snub badly and his career took on a nomadic existence as he moved to Everton, Burnley, Boston and to China in a last bid to recapture former glories.

Well documented problems with drink and depression in recent years saw him in and out of clinics in a bid to get himself back on the straight and narrow.

His life seemed to be back on track and he was given the opportunity to manage non-league Kettering Town.

However, after just 39 days in charge he was sacked after allegations about his drinking.
